Why I’m paying more attention to Wells Fargo Rewards than ever before

You don’t need a credit card with a massive annual fee to start earning valuable travel rewards points. Wells Fargo has built a surprisingly accessible ecosystem, with a lineup of affordable cards that offer generous rewards rates on everyday purchases.

Ever since the program launched transfer partners in 2024, I’ve been strategically using a two-card setup to earn Wells Fargo Rewards points. While it may not get as much attention as the major transferable points currencies, there are several key advantages that travelers shouldn’t overlook.

Rewards cards with low barriers to entry

Big-name programs such as American Express Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards typically require you to have a specific annual-fee card to unlock full transfer partner access. That’s not the case with Wells Fargo.

The Wells Fargo Autograph Card is a great place to start, as it doesn’t charge any annual fee and gives you full access to transfer partners on its own. The card earns unlimited 3x points on restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services, and select phone plans, while all other purchases earn 1x points.

It’s rare to find a no-annual-fee card with bonus categories this broad, particularly at a 3x earning rate across so many everyday spending categories. I use the card heavily for gas purchases, and the rewards add up quickly. As another bonus, the Wells Fargo Autograph is a Visa card, so I can also use it at Costco gas stations.

Where the $95 card earns its keep

The “premium” card within the Wells Fargo ecosystem is the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey, which comes with a relatively modest $95 annual fee. It has quickly become my go-to card for travel expenses: Whether I’m booking directly through a hotel chain or using a third-party platform like Hotels.com, I’m still earning 5x points on all hotel purchases. The 4x earning rate on airline purchases is also notably generous. (Like its no-annual-fee counterpart, you’ll still earn 3x points on travel and restaurants, and 1x points on everything else.)

While not technically part of the Wells Fargo Autograph family, you can pair a cash-back card like the Wells Fargo Active Cash Card (which earns 2% cash rewards on purchases) with one of the cards above and convert those rewards into Wells Fargo Rewards points. Since the card has no annual fee, its earning rates are effectively equivalent to earning 2x points across a broader range of spending categories.

Underrated transfer partners

Wells Fargo Rewards now offers nearly a dozen airline and hotel transfer partners. The transfer ratio is 1:1 for programs like Aer Lingus AerClub, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, Avianca LifeMiles, British Airways Club, Cathay Pacific Cathay, Iberia Club, JetBlue TrueBlue, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, and Virgin Red.

However, transfers to hotel programs like Choice Privileges and Wyndham Rewards occur at a 1:2 ratio, meaning every Wells Fargo Rewards point becomes 2 hotel points once transferred.

Additionally, points move over to most partners instantly and can be transferred starting with as little as 1 point. Most transferable rewards programs require transfers in 1,000-point increments, so being able to transfer the exact number of points you need is a useful, unique feature.

While many of Wells Fargo Rewards’ transfer partners are international loyalty programs, that’s actually where some of the best value in points and miles exists. Instead of redeeming points directly through a domestic airline program like Delta, I’ll often book the exact same flight through partners such as Air France-KLM Flying Blue or Virgin Atlantic Flying Club for significantly fewer points.

The same strategy applies across other major airlines. American Airlines flights can often be booked through British Airways Club, while United Airlines flights are frequently available through Avianca LifeMiles at competitive redemption rates. (Plus, the Points Path Pro browser extension makes it easy to identify these partner award opportunities automatically while searching for flights.)

At a time when some other credit card rewards programs are cutting transfer partners or weakening transfer ratios below 1:1, Wells Fargo Rewards feels refreshingly straightforward and accessible. The program has continued expanding its ecosystem while maintaining simple, and sometimes, even more advantageous transfer rates.
